Giza Pyramids Revamp 2025: New Entrance, Tourist Services & Grand Egyptian Museum Opening

 

The Giza Pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, are getting a modern makeover. After years of development, the revamped Giza Plateau is set to begin trial operations on April 7, 2025, with a full-scale grand opening on July 3, 2025—coinciding with the launch of the much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum. This multi-million-dollar transformation aims to enhance the tourist experience, offering better facilities, new access routes, and modern amenities while preserving the site’s ancient legacy.

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a new entrance via the Fayoum Desert Road, replacing the historic entrance near the Mena House Hotel. This change is designed to improve traffic flow and visitor accessibility, reducing congestion and enhancing security measures.

Why the Change?

• Improved Accessibility: The Fayoum Road entrance is expected to streamline visitor access, avoiding previous congestion issues.

• Eco-Friendly Transport: The new site layout includes electric buses to transport visitors, replacing traditional camel and horse rides.

• Better Organization: The structured visitor routes will offer a more immersive, educational experience while minimizing disruption to the archaeological site.

What’s New? Upgraded Tourist Services

The development project, led by Orascom Pyramids Entertainment (OPE) in partnership with Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, has introduced several key features:

1. New Visitor Center

A modern visitor center will serve as the first stop for guests, providing:

• Interactive exhibits about the history and construction of the pyramids.

• A cinema hall screening a documentary on ancient Egyptian civilization.

• Multilingual guides and digital tools to enhance the experience.

2. Eco-Friendly Electric Buses

To preserve the fragile desert landscape, traditional horse and camel rides will be gradually phased out in favor of electric buses, ensuring a sustainable and carbon-friendly travel option for tourists.

3. 9 Pyramids Lounge – The First-Ever Restaurant on the Site

Visitors can now dine with a view at the 9 Pyramids Lounge, a Bedouin-inspired restaurant and café built to blend seamlessly with the desert surroundings. This marks the first-ever official dining spot within the Giza Pyramids complex.

4. Structured Visitor Route with Key Stops

The new tour experience includes seven designated stops, ensuring a well-organized journey through the pyramid complex, from the Sphinx to the Great Pyramid and beyond.

5. Improved Pathways and Parking Areas

Expanded parking facilities and paved pathways will make the site more accessible to all visitors, including those with disabilities.

Investment and Economic Impact

OPE has invested approximately EGP 1.5 billion (USD 29.5 million) into the Giza Plateau project, with an additional EGP 500 million (USD 9.8 million) injected in November 2024 for final developments.

This investment is expected to:

• Boost Egypt’s tourism industry by attracting more international visitors.
• Create job opportunities in the hospitality and service sectors.
• Increase revenue from ticket sales, guided tours, and new commercial areas.
